Title: I'll Be Seeing You

Summary: Steve finally gives Peggy that dance.
Author's note: I haven't written in AGES! I apologize if it isn't up to par with my older writing.
He looks just the same as he did the last time she saw him. The last time she saw him alive, at any rate. The same as he looked in all the papers, in all the videos. The same way he looked all the times she saw him in her dreams. Frozen in time, as he froze in the ice.
She is old, and not as sharp as she once was. But she’s sharp enough to know that when she sees a young Steve Rogers standing in front of her, he’s not real.
Of course, her illusions have never tried to touch her. She can usually close her eyes for a couple seconds and remind herself that Steve is dead, that he has been for many years, and when she opens her eyes, he’ll be gone. When she closes her eyes this time, she feels a familiar hand on hers. Not that of Steve Rogers, but that of her caretaker, Rico. “Peggy?” he whispers gently. She opens her eyes and notices the man beside him. It’s Steve again, as she’s seen many times.
“Peggy?” Rico says again. “You’ve got a visitor.” He turns to Steve (young, just the same as he looked back then, just the same as he always looked to her) and nods respectfully before leaving them.
“Peggy?” Steve’s voice is just as quiet, as gentle as Rico’s was. He seems not to know how to react as he cautiously, tentatively places his hand on hers. She finally knows that this is not an illusion, is not a dream.
Steve looks her over, and she feels suddenly ashamed. He’s the same as he was, but she has aged. She’s not the beautiful, strong woman she was when he knew her. What could possibly be going through his mind as he looks over her, strokes her hand as if he’s afraid to break it?
But smiles at her and his grip tightens, and he helps her to her feet. “Hey,” he says, pulling her close. “I’m sorry I was late.”
And, slowly, they start to dance.
