Montreal

May 12, 2008 17:56

It looks like I'm going on a road trip to Montreal for Memorial Day weekend. I've never been to Montreal before and neither has the friend I'm going with. Does anyone have advice re places to stay, things to do, places to eat?

P.S. The talk I had to give today is over, I breath a great sigh of relief :)

Hi,

We don't know each other but I couldn't resist commenting on a post about Montreal! r_ness is a great resource for this city, too. Hope this is helpful!

Places to eat:

Au Noir (opened in the last year, staff are all blind, you order beforehand and eat in complete darkness)
Casa Tapas (on Rachel Est)
Biere & Compagnie (beer and mussels)
Eggspectations (breakfast--don't go to the one near Atwater but the downtown location, it's better)
Santropol (hippie cafe, good sandwiches, great cake, smoothies, etc.)

Get your fill of fast food lebanese--Amir, Boustan, etc.

If you like Iranian, I'll try to track down the name/location of a great place west of the city.

There's usually a festival going on in the summer--pick up one of the local event papers (free), they'll have all the details.

Go see tam-tams (drum circle), usually Sunday mornings at Mont Royal park. Construction forced them to move but it should be back up by now.

If you like farmers markets, go to Jean Talon for the market there. St. Denis and St. Laurent are cool places to people watch. Old Port is fun but touristy. There are plenty of things to do in Montreal but it's good to leave yourself time to just soak in the city and atmosphere.
