Okay, first of all, read
this. It will make this post much easier to understand.
The rest of the entry is cut for pictures.
I've been letterboxing enthusiastically lately, and I think I'm going to stick with it, possibly forever. I'm having fun with the clues and the hiking. I am. But mostly I've been having fun with the rubber stamps. Subsequently, I'm getting into carving my own. I'm sure that if you read the wiki article you know that every good letterboxer has hir own personal identification stamp. Mine was simple, at first. I bought it in a store. It's an alien -- I like him, and he suits me. Here he is:
I like him. But after a month or two of letterboxing, it's somewhat gauche to use a store-bought stamp. Being happy with my alien, I decided to recreate him. I used a rubber eraser and a paring knife, and this is what i came up with:
I've been using him ever since. I'm somewhat proud of him. I also decided to make something to experiment with the idea that things have to be backwards on a rubber stamp, and so I made my initials.
I'm going to use that as my exchange, if I ever meet another boxer who's interested in swapping.
I've also made two other stamps, to see if I could copy a design. There's tracing paper involved, and rubber blocks meant for stamp carving, and carving tools -- a gouge, a line cutter, a linoleum knife, etc -- but even as a novice I'm not bad at it.
The first, my dad is going to use as his identifier when we go letterboxing together -- he's a hiker, I'm not. It should be fun.
This is the design I was going for:
And this is how it came out:
The second is the symbol for Devo. I decided awhile ago that if I ever got a tattoo, this would be what I would get. I'm going to hide it, I think.
Here's what I was going for:
And here's how it came out:
All in all, I'm rather pleased.
Tomorrow, Heather will be MOD and she says that it's okay if I make a stamp while I'm working, and Foster says it's okay if we hide it at Regal (although I don't think he knows what letterboxing is, really). So that should be fun. And Elijah is going to make a personal stamp soon, I hope. I'm all excited.
All this letterboxing fun almost makes up for the fact that I got two flat-out rejections today. Almost.
