Last night's adventure had all the ingredients of a "buddy" dream, one that often steals elements of different people in real life that I'm attracted to into one amalgam along with the conceit that I've known this person for a long time.
They often take place in familiar places from my past and present: Queens, Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan, church coffee hours, co-counseling workshops - any place where a large, diverse group of people might credibly gather.
But I've noticed that ever since I added central Connecticut to my itinerary that my subconscious has had trouble creating a venue that includes elements of all the places I visit, especially in the summer. For example, last night began in a residential neighborhood that was clearly part of an urban area; there was a small gathering of people on the top floor of a multi-story building.
The building is in a neighborhood very familiar to my dreams, densely populated but largely white; it reminds me a lot of the neighborhoods that once existed in Eastern Queens at the time I was in high school - in any event, clearly within flapping-my-arms-and-flying distance of Mommyland. The window is always close enough to the roof that I can climb out catch an upward current but also close enough to the ground that I can make a quick escape, if I should so choose.
Why was Jude Law makig an appearance all of a sudden? Maybe it had to do with the fact that he appeared in two movies I stumbled upon while trying to fall asleep last night: "The Amazing Mr. Ripley" and "The Secrets of Dumbledore". I didn't have the patience (even while falling asleep) to watch either of them completely but I caught enough of the trailers to garner the fact that both had LGBTQ subplots.
Anyway, as mentioned above, Jude and I had some sort of prior acquaintance within the context of the dream. It's also interesting that it was the younger Jude, not the Dumbledore Jude who was occupying the character. The other thing that just occurred to me is how much the gathering resembed to late stages of a Big Brother House, the reality tv program. I doubt there were more than half a dozen people in someone's apartment, talking quietly - maybe having a beer or two. And linking up with each other.
I clearly have a thing for Jude. And, Jude knows it. He's being kind. But, he's also clearly interested in a young woman who is also at the gathering. The two of them eventually leave, using the window as an exit. They land in a courtyard below.
This is where it gets interesting because as I look out the window and find the couple below, Jude looks up and invites me to come and join them. There doesn't appear to be a romantic tryst going on. They are just getting a breath of fresh air. I question that assumption once I am on the ground, but Jude makes it clear that he likes me and would like to get to know me better, hence the invitation to join him and his other new friend. The dream ends just as I'm starting to process it all.
