This morning's dream felt faintly familiar; it had some of the hallmarks of a travel dream. But, the emphasis was less on the coming and going and more on the venue itself. It took place at carnival and for virtually the entire length of the dream. In that respect, it felt like a step beyond the usual church retreat, college reunion or RC workshop memes that I am familiar with.
To begin with, it was peopled almost completely with strangers. And, the only reason I'm qualifying that statement is because at certain points the characters - and one character in particular - represent amalgams of two or more people I know in real life. More about that later.
The other speculative element is the where of the place. I say that because it never felt as though I was very far from home. In fact, there may have been an instance during the dream when I actually went home - on foot - and came back to the carnival, the remarkable thing being that at no time did I get lost, unable to find my way back.
And, that's the point, I think. Having spent the very first sequences of the dream walking around the carnival grounds which didn't seem much bigger than an ordinary city playground, I wanted to return to it. I think I had run out of money. There was a game or a ride that I had particularly enjoyed and wanted to play again. Can't remember what made it so enjoyable. It didn't require a lot of energy and may have involved nothing more than sitting in a room with a pair of goggles on. But, I wanted to do it again.
I remembered that in order to gain admittance, you needed a special coin of some sort, almost like an old-fashioned subway token. I still had the one that I had used previously and wasn't sure that it could be used again or required some sort of renewing process. I decided to find out by using it again.
But, I don't remember ever really finding out. Something distracted me along the way to the attraction. I fell into a conversation with one of the "carnies". He was one of many such carnival types who peopled the dream and who frankly made it so enjoyable: quirky, expansive, slightly bawdy people who while not old, were not exactly young either. I don't remember precisely what we talked about. I get the feeling it was mostly about how much fun I was having. Then, we were joined by another man, another carnie at first. Both seemed well into their forties and in good shape, with maybe a touch too much Grecian Formula in their hair. But, fun to be around.
The third guy was especially friendly and within the conceit of the dream morphed into someone that I knew outside the carnival. He was my proctologist. I remarked that he knew me "rather well."
In reality, he looked nothing like my proctologist, but rather like someone I wish my proctologist did look like (actually, he looked more like my GP who I do have something of a crush on.)
End of dream.
