I realized a week ago during an episode of "Bull", a new courtroom drama appearing on CBS, that my old Saturday Kitchen co-worker, Sam Gilroy, was alive and well and getting acting gigs. He had one foot in the door already as the son of well-known screenwriter, Tony Gilroy. When I knew him, he was still on the waiting list for Wesleyan and Dartmouth. Unaware of how well-connected he was, I naively offered to write him a recommendation for Wes. He politely declined the offer and eventually wound up at the Ivy League school.
So, I basically hadn't seen him in ten years. He was playing a villain on the show and I couldn't help but notice how hard and hollow his eyes looked. Maybe, it was just good acting, but, he already had the face of a forty year-old at the tender age of 27. One more reminder of how hard an actor's life can be.
Another Sam, fka Usher Boy, has left St. Mike's just as suddenly as he made his splashy appearance over a year ago. By all accounts, he is on the West Coast, enrolled as a college student.
I am also reminded of another Saturday Kitchen Sam, the sweet, soft-spoken young man who commuted from his dad's house in Long Island City (or, was it Elmhurst?) in order to devote time on the food line (he was often in charge of desserts.) I haven't seen him since Crosby was chief cook and bottle-washer.
And, last but, not by any means least, is my stalwart co-counselor, Sam. We just had our second session in as many weeks and it feels like we have found our groove again after a nearly six-week pause. It's caused me to kick my house-keeping regimen into high gear and even though I still have mounds of paper to go through, our co-counseling space gets a little more comfy each week.
This morning we both came to session feeling a bit "bloated" and in Sam's case, even headache-y, due to forgoing our normal morning coffee. I let Sam go as client first. He basically just needed to relax and decompress after a long work week.
I decided during my session to bring him up to date on my health scare and covered a lot of heavy material, including the hours leading up to Mom's death two years ago. I have barely been able to move since I bade Sam farewell at the door some eight hours ago.
saturday kitchen,
sam the man,
