Crosby must be in town by now. I can feel it. I spent the better part of this afternoon stalking Washington Heights where I'm pretty sure his favorite Chinese restaurant is located. It was a blisteringly hot day but it took only a few moments to imagine seeing him among the throng of largely poor, Hispanic people populating the sidewalks along Juan Pablo Duarte Boulevard; there are, in fact, many young, white faces in the crowd. All of which made e wonder how much he would be missing all of this once he moves for L.A.? Not that L.A. or California as a whole lacks Hispanic people or poor people. But, I don't think there is the same common use of public space out there that there certainly is in New York. The automobile makes all of that contact unnecessary.
And, of course, summer is the time of year when there is an overabundance of public contact - unless, you're someone like me who can't get enough of young men in tank tops, blissfully soaking up the (largely) silent plaudits as they pass by. I'm sure there are people who feel the same way about young women in tank tops. And, cut-off jeans. Oh, the cut-off jeans!
