The Third Sunday After Epiphany

An all hands on deck e-mail went out early on Saturday to all the members of the Vestry. The snowstorm had hit the very weekend St. Michael's was expecting to hold its Annual Meeting and the voting for a new batch of Vestry members and Warden. One Warden was already sending her apologies due to being stranded in California. The Bings, I would find out later, were stranded in Upper Manhattan because their subway line was closed. Choir was cancelled.

My trip was pretty straightforward; there are so many lines connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn to choose from. If the red line was running too slow (as it appeared to be) I could always walk a little distance further and swipe my metrocard at a turnstile leading to one of the alphabet lines. The alphabet lines nearly all stopped at 59th Street, only four stations away from St. Mike's. I got there in time to hear about half the homily.

Once again, The Rector could not have directed her remarks more sharply in my direction had she lurked on this blogspot for little more than a day. The bulk of her message was taken from 1 Corinthians (The Epistle) where Paul writes about the Body of the Church. The Rector's message clearly was that The Body, through its parts, had a lot of work to do.

The church was in fine voice; many members of the choir had in fact found their way to service and were salted in different places around the sanctuary like amplifiers in a speaker.

Later, while counting the offering I began to realize from different conversations that lots of people had received letters from Crosby (Colette had hinted as much in her Facebook reply.) Apparently, he was working off a list of donors to The Camino. He was sending us each a "Thank You" letter. It was a brilliant idea to make them handwritten. Just the very fact that he was making the effort to personalize each one - in that painstakingly precise print of his! It was all a little mind-boggling. I know for a fact, that each one was a little different from the others.

the rector, st. mikes, the crosbys, trains, weather, travel, letters, camino
