Sixth Sunday of Epiphany

Feb 12, 2012 19:53

Things have settled down a bit at St. Michael's. The old-timers who had briefly filled its pews, in honor of Russell and Lawrence, have returned to their adopted congregations. Even the presence of a retired Bishop wassn't enough to coax people back a second Sunday in a row.

The Bishop's connection to New York is a recent one; he is assisting the Diocese of New York in what I assume is a temporary capacity. His home base is Wyoming. He gave The Sermon and followed it by a post-Coffee Hour discussion of his ministry. He is a big, friendly man who peers over his eyeglasses to meet the gaze of onlookers, whose fists resemble small hams. But, the one fact I took away from the entire morning was that he owns his own horse.

Previously, right after The Dismissal, Hassan, Clifton and I spotted something odd about John S. -- he was carrying the Bishop's staff, apparently so the Bishop could shake hands and move around more freely. We all agreed it would make an amusing picture and maybe even a prescient one, in ten or twenty years. So, out came the phone cameras. Unfortunately, John demurred and we had to delete the images. Further evidence of his humility and diplomatic instincts. He could see the unfortunate parallel even if we couldn't.
