Now that Chevy Chase has been acquired by Capital One Bank, and all the branches and infrastructure assimilated into the COB hive mind, I notice that the minimum balance for checking accounts and service fees have been hiked.
Chevy Chase Bank was a well known and friendly area name for as long as I can remember, and I was a loyal customer thanks to an ATM on every street corner, reasonable fees and terms, and several convenient branches to me. That bank has slipped away into history and Capital One Bank, in its place, behaving more like the typical big regional bank.
Not that there's anything wrong with making a profit, but it can result in lost business and watching your customers walk out the door for the last time. That's freedom to choose and its how the people keep the corporations that serve OUR interests on their toes... unless you're particularly attracted to the idea of becoming a whiny self-made victim, which I'm not.
And it gives me the opportunity to reassess the banking options in my area.
I'll miss you Chevy Chase Bank...
