I made it to a comic book store for free comic book day. I was at Famous Faces and Funnies in Melbourne, FL for the very start of the festivities.

FFF was great. They let us take five of the special free comic book day comics, five comics from several boxes they set outside (which included everyhing from Thor, to Youngblood, to Green Lantern, to 1602 and lots more), and also gave special percentages off everything in the store. Not only that, but FFF is having Free Comic Book May! You get a punch card from them, return every Saturday for a free comic and other items, and once you have all the punch cards, the first 200 people on the last Saturday in May get a free graphic novel! Pretty sweet deal.

The also had several artist on hand to draw and hand out free sketches to whomever asked. I picked up an original sketch of Sonic the Hedgehog (for nostalgia factor) from Nelson Ortega, which you can see front and center in the photo below.

Left to right: Beyond Wonderland, Jake the Dreaming illustrated novel excerpts, Elric, MouseGuard/Dark Crystal double, Path of the Planeswalker, the Sonic original sketch, five issues of a comic called Warlands, and Dungeons and Dragons Classics Volume 1 (the only purchase I made at $15.)

And here’s a shot of Ortega working on the sketch:

They had a good showing, we were packed in like rats to to the small space they had, but they did a good job and kept things moving smoothly if slowly. I would definitely go back there next year.
