I went out to a party with Couchsurfers last night. We went to this sweeeeeet bar on "king street" kiraly utca. It was a lot of fun. But one of the very interesting things that I took away had to do with the country directly south: Serbia. Everyone I've met who is a local in Hungary tells me that I HAVE to visited Belgrade and Serbia in general. In the US, Serbia does not have the best reputation. I generally like serbian music, but I really had no interest in going there.
Until last night.
I met a girl who grew up most of her life in Belgrade. We talked at length about the Yugoslav wars and the most recent crises in Kosovo. But the thing I took away the most is how one sided the American media really was of the situation. I still feel that Serbia was in the wrong and that something had to be done, but there was really no mention of what was going on with civilians. I vividly recall the American bombings of Belgrade and all over Serbia. It seemed like a video game sometimes. It didn't really hit home at all. It was very different for her. Just discussing what it was like for her was really an entirely different experience for me. It's a side of that conflict that I have never heard of before. And now I'm actually really excited to go to Serbia sometime in the future.
The more you learn... the more hungry you get to learn more.
Also, I'm going to a party at her place tonight. Sometimes, I'm just glad to live in this world. And I'm glad I am able to meet these people.
