We stayed on the Nicoya Peninsula the whole time. Between Montezuma and Cobano. The people are a lot nicer in tourist spots, mostly because they think you have money. I gave up trying to fit in after a few days, because you are white in latin-america and stick out wherever you go. The men are really really macho and throw themselves at any girl. If you have a guy with you its not as bad but carin had a super shitty time trying to do anything by herself. She was cat-called and hissed at every few feet. Also when she wore shorts it was a lot worse.
We didn't go to any of those spots, but they all sound really really awesome. the country is beautiful and when you meet great people it makes them even more awesome. A lot of people speak english, but they tolerate you a lot more when you speak spanish.
San jose is where i'm assuming you're flying into. The town is actually really really awesome. there's a ton of cool shit in downtown. Great restaurants that are pretty cheap. Don't eat fast food. Its really bad there....like the cute little catina's with Diner-style service and booths....they look really awesome but the food isn't.
The fish is amazing. Juice is amazing. Fruit grows everywhere. Liquor is really expensive. (You can find cheap rum though....7$-14$ a bottle....and GUARO, which is like rum, made in costa rica and incredibly strong and pretty affordable.) At the airport, before you leave, buy a few bottles of this Coffee liquor called Cafe Rica. Its 7$ a bottle and its 32% alcohol, which makes it almost twice as strong as Baily's. Its fucking awesome. Also, at the airport, they have tons of free coffee, chocolate, and liquor samples.
I had heard that it was like that for women. Something about if your with a guy and he's on the wrong side of you then he is your pimp and if your alone then your really in for it. That does not sound good. I think its supposed to be a little better in the touristy spot.
We are flying into San Jose but we will be immediately shipped out to get to Arenal. I won't have any time to do anything there. And now I wish I could!
What all were you guys up to? Volunteering or something? I swear you guys lives are so much more exciting than mine! I get to sit in front of a computer all day, come home, eat, watch a movie, sleep. Rinse and repeat. I do plan on going there one day for a volunteering trip but they are expensive!
Glad to hear there are so many awesome things about it. Can't wait to go!
We just went for fun. We could have volunteered somewhere, but we were booth so done with work of any kind after leaving new orleans that we were glad to have nothing to do for a while.
the tickets to costa rica are a few hundred dollars roundtrip (Taka? Taaka? is the cheapest). but once you get down there, there are a ton of things you can do to stay cheap, like organic farming with WOOF. Or volunteering at an animal sanctuary called Rainsong.
