I dropped William off at the airport last night, and he flew back to Michigan. My verdict? I definitely like him, and I'm glad my sister is marrying him. The boyfriend she had a few years ago that she talked marriage with was arrogant, pretentious, and self-righteous. Thank the Lord that never happened. I like the idea of a brother-in-law I will actually enjoy talking to.
Laura, William, and I went to the Messina Hof Winery in Bryan last Friday, as promised, and I had a great time. I had never been to a winery before, but they took us through the vineyard, the warehouse to see the barrels of fermenting wine, and the facility where corks are inserted into the bottles. Even better, we got to sample four of their wines, including their tawny port, which was excellent. Sadly, bottles of the port were $60, so I had to pass for the moment. The owners of the winery seem to embody some of the stereotypes of the nouveau riche Americans--the bed and breakfast on site was adorned with the "wooden doors from Louis Pasteur's summer home" and inside was a piece of stained glass the tour guide assured us was "the only piece of art actually sold by the Lourve." I'm not sure I believe that claim, but it reminded me of Citizen Kane, where Kane buys everything he sees in Europe simply because he can and has it shipped back home.
