Wal-Mart

May 08, 2005 00:17

We went to a party yesterday night, a guy there was insisting Wal-Mart is evil, he was drunk, and an Idiot, i wasn't going to argue with a drunk moron.

My thoughts?
Wal-Mart is NOT evil.

Why not?

First, let's look at all the things people hate about Wal-Mart.
1. People say it has really small Aisles
2. People say it kills small businesses
3. People complain about the low wages to employees
4. People complain about employee treatment
5. People complain about Gender Discrimination
6. The list goes on...from unfriendliness to coldness to a horrible atmosphere.

Now let me look at this reasonably.
I have been to Wal-Mart most my life, my mother works there (Mother = Woman = No problem getting a job there = Gender Discrimination?), The aisles are perfectly sized, every aisle is made for two carts to fit down, what more do people want? Is it necessary to drive a Mac truck through aisles? Would they prefer some sort of airplane hanger with 2 aisles, giving enough room for 3 jets to fit through? I have never had a problem with aisle size at Wal-Mart. Maybe it is the location, making this a horrible generalization. But from my experience, Wal-Mart has good aisle width.
Wal-Mart kills small business? No. Small businesses aren't able to compete with Wal-Mart's low prices--low prices which benefit everybody. So people can easily choose an overpriced store, or Wal-Mart's "Everyday Low Prices," it isn't a difficult decision. Who cares what profit margin they are working at, ECONOMICS says that people will buy more at lower prices...therefore, Wal-Mart does NOT destroy small businesses, small businesses destroy themselves by remaining just that, a small business and offering higher priced items. At one point, Wal-Mart was a small business, they didn't put themselves out of business...did they? It is called capitalism. Deal with it.
If you think about the rational about some source, selling more for less with a super-vast selection, putting everything else out of businees, you know what I think of? Ebay, or Amazon.com. Seriously. The internet is also providing this stuff. I buy almost all of my cds used from the internet, even new ones, so much cheaper. I'm a smart shopper...example: We went to this record shop in Muncie, they had cds for $18+, that's fucking ridiculous. I'm NOT paying that. You want me to buy that, you sell it cheaper.
Low wages to employees? Businesses are only REQUIRED to pay is roughly $5.15, varying from state to state. Mom said that starting wage is close to 6 dollars an hour, a dollar extra if you're willing to work 3rd shift. I believe my mom gets paid 12? Maybe even more to work there, she has worked there for many years, she has experience, she is paid for what she does. WHAT are people EXPECTING?! How many college degrees does it require to pass an application into Wal-Mart? Why don't people complain to the government for the low minimum wage? (Raising it is a stupid idea, that would completely throw off the value of the dollar and set the entire country back, prices would rise, inflation would occur, in the end, nothing would come of it). Employees of Wal-Mart stock shelves, help customers find things, check customers out, etc. THEY AREN'T PERFORMING BRAIN SURGERY, THEY SHOULDN'T BE MAKING A LOAD OF MONEY!!! If you want to afford that Porche, I wouldn't suggest a job at your neighborhood Wal-Mart.
How is Employee Treatment? Well, Wal-Mart has an open door policy, you can walk right into the owner's office and raise your voice. Do people complain? Yes! More so than you hear from other places? Probably...why? BECAUSE WAL-MART EMPLOYS MORE PEOPLE THAN ANY OTHER PLACE! Of course you'll get asshole managers, that is part of the name, you'll get good ones, but not always. The more people employed, the better chance of an asshole manager, and therefore a better chance of problems such as this occuring.
Gender Discrimination. I can't really speak much about this except through experience. Going through a Wal-Mart, I would honestly say I see either 50/50 Male and Female, if not more females working. There isn't discrimination going on, at least where I can see. My mom hasn't had problems in her years working there...it's fine. Once again, this goes back to the MASS amount of employees.
Coldness? Unfriendly? No! Wal-Mart has always had a nice tone about it. You get the friendly people greeter when you get there. Of course you're occasionally get the old lady who looks like she hates God and all his creations, but that's a rarity. I read that somebody complained that they had stuff packed to the ceiling. Once again, NOT TRUE. Wal-Mart's now have even started getting rid of the upper rafters (The stuff that goes above reaching level, which was just sitting there (not close enough to the ceiling to say it's touching or even reaching for it) so if somebody wanted a different style or they ran out, an employee could easily help get it down without having to run into the back and waste the customer's time (Never thought about it that way, did you??). If you look at Wal-Marts now, you don't see even what it used to be, they're expanding the backroom and because of technology are starting to use warehouses to keep things and use a very elaborate computer system to always remain stocked. Wal-Marts are connected to each other, if you want something that only comes from California, hell YOU CAN GET IT! That's a lot better than that Mom & Pop's that were going to charge you 3 times the price if they had anything remotely like you wanted.
What other bull can people say about it? That because it is a successful business built by a good businessman that it is run by Satan? EVEN if Satan DID exist, this is completely ridiculous, i Doubt his plan would be to attack people through low prices...in that case God would be that shitty expensive store down the road that is going out of business.
Wal-Mart is one of those things that people just have their heads up their asses about. They provide a service, at a reasonable price, if you can't match it, then it is your fault. It has become one of those things that people love to scape-goat. It is one of those things that people just buy along with without really thinking. "Oh, Wal-Mart is evil? Cool..." Fuck...THINK FOR YOURSELF. How much more would be accomplished in this world if people would just stop acting like everybody else? Think about it...new pepsi commercial, Puff Daddy rides a pepsi truck to an awards show, so everybody else gets one. Clever. Very original. Saddest part about that commercial is how realistic it REALLY IS. Everybody cares about fitting in and making a huge point that they think what you think, well it is complete bullshit and people need to analyze facts before they make rash decisions regarding ANY matter. Don't fucking like a band because I like them or EVERYBODY else likes them. Don't fucking wear a shirt with a band on it unless you actually know their songs. Don't be a fucking tool, think for yourself.
Wal-Mart has changed the world for a better. Look, I THOUGHT FOR MYSELF!
