Wow...Yeah Wow.
First batter up during the Home Run Derby.
A little insight real quick for those who don't know much about it.
1. You pick your pitcher, he throws pitches to you, so you can hit them
2. You swing when you want to swing, it doesn't count against you
3. Every ball you swing/hit at counts, if it does anything except become a home run, you have an out
4. You get 10 outs
5. There are 10 people, 3 rounds
6. After the first round, top 4 people go on, After second top 2, Third round is the final and the winner is decided from that
**Records as of Yesterday**
1. Most Home Runs per Round - 15, that was set last year, the previous records were 14, 14 and 13
2. Farthest Home Run - 524 Feet, set by Sammy Sosa a couple years back or so.
So Bobby Abreu, a Phillies hitter comes up. He's a decent hitter.
He comes up and hit after hit he gets a home run.
Here comes 14 Home Runs and he only has maybe 5 or less outs.
Can he tie the record?!?
YES! There is 15 but wait..wait..he has a couple more in him
he doesnt just bounce past the record by getting a couple more, he didn't end up with 18 HR, 19,..20...nope, He eventually hit 24 Home Runs...that is 9 more than the previous record.
Not only that, but he hit one ball that went 517 feet. That makes him 2nd in Farthest.
So as of now he is the record holder for most home runs hit per round and he holds the 2nd place for the farthest hit ball during the home run derby.
Bit of trivia they just mentioned. Detroit (where this takes place) is where the longest home run in history is said to have been hit, by the great Babe Ruth...I'm not surew of this number because I'm going from memory but I believe it was 626 Feet. The ball supposidly flew out of the stadium and ended up a block or two away! A kid on a bicycle found it and brought it to the Babe.
Insanity.
