Oh, I think I get it now.
As I've told many people, I'm middle management at a pager company. What does this mean, other than the fact that I'm a walking Dilbert strip? Well, It basically means that I'm customer service, first-level tech support, billing, collections, network ops, marketing, inventory control, the office administrator, a jumped-up secretary, a sales agent, a sales manager, low-ranking HR, and a cat herder all rolled into one.
When I first joined my company, there were five people working in this city's branch, and a technician who spent most of his time on the road so we barely saw him. As the months went by, we started losing people here and there to other companies, firings, and the like. Two weeks ago, it was me, the director, and the never-here technician.
By 5:00 tonight, it'll just be me and my absentee tech. My boss is resigning, and submitted his letter to the VP two weeks ago.
Needless to say, I picked up more and more work as everybody left. The good news is that as my field rank rose, I was able to start delegating work to other offices within the company. Doing everything mentioned above still definitely keeps me on my toes, but I'm able to take breathers now and then, which is a damn sight better than some of my last positions.
