Whoa uh weird I am replying to a livejournal via a twitter, I hope this doesn't cause some chain reaction that makes the internet implode.

Guessing you don't care about purism here, but I don't think Casablanca or The Invisible Man (you mean the H.G. wells adaptation, right?) are often classified as noir, and Manchurian Candidate definitely isn't. I assume you have those '30s gangster movies up there as part of the "proto" category, which is defensible but not a purist's choice. Also, the Citizen Kane question...I infer by the lack of an asterisk that you've never seen it, so I certainly won't stop you, and I think some people consider it part of the noir cycle, although I'm not one of them.

Now that my nitpicking is over, I can be useful and provide additions:

-SCARLET STREET (1945)
-ACT OF VIOLENCE (1948)
-THEY LIVE BY NIGHT (1948)
-NIGHT AND THE CITY (1950)
-ON DANGEROUS GROUND (1952)
-PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET (1953)
-THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)
-THE KILLING (1956)

Neo-noir suggestions...

-BLAST OF SILENCE (1961)
-BODY HEAT (1981) [This is the most "pure" and essential neo-noir, imho]

Good luck on your project, whenever I try something like this it always fails (e.g. I was going to spend this summer watching the entirety of The Sopranos, with an episode every day, but here it is late June and I've only watched 2 eps). But I'm sure your resolve is steelier than mine.

Shit I also wanted to suggest THE DARK CORNER (1946), which has some of the noir-est lighting you'll find, and CRISS CROSS (1949), which has one of the quintessential noir plots.
