Lj Idol: Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me!

Dec 05, 2009 09:39

The sun. A very bright, gaseous ball located millions of miles away that is so hot, so massive, that it can heat a series of planets and control how they are oriented. When she blows one day, and ultimately she will, all life in its system will cease to exist. It is fortunate for us piddly humans that we are in a place that gives us just the right amount of exposure to keep temperatures regular, meaning that we are neither broiled nor left to freeze solid. Is it any wonder then that many cultures worshipped the sun as a God?
If the sun has this much control over the external system, isn't it reasonable to consider that it might also control our inner systems, (i.e.) the mind? I can tell you that for this man, it certainly does. I am never more aware of that than at this time of year, when bleak, rainy days far outnumber bright, cheery ones.
People are amused by my mad dashes to capture what shadows of light break through on occasion. Just the other day while sitting in front of one of my university's libraries, a Korean woman came to ask me if I needed assistance as I studied on the wall. "Only if you can help me find a sunnier spot!" By the time we arrived at the bench that had been previously, it had already fallen back into shade. I therefore reluctantly chose to head back to my former area.
I believe I suffer from some degree of Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD). It is really difficult for me to maintain a positive mood, focus, and energy when I can't bask in that glorious light. This may be ironic for a blind person, but I don't think so as the sun's effects can still be perceived by the nerves within the eye even if the eyes themselves don't work properly. I think it would actually be very beneficial for me if I could come up with more productive ways to deal with this particular challenge, and especially as I am currently slogging through the last of a very tough semester of graduate school. Even in my earlier college days, this period was a challenge for me due to the limited amount of exposure I could get while sitting outside.

I hope mostly that the sun doesn't go down on me or anyone else. If you have this difficulty too, it might be productive to pull up your blinds and roll a chair over to the window if it is too cold to go out, as I discovered. Or better yet, let's pack our things and move to the sunshine state! No matter what, I have to find a way to keep that light in my life.
