Point. Pop. "Ah, there we go, just about perfect!"
I relax my face and step back. "No wait! Let me get another one!" (Dang it.) "Ok ok, right there. Head just a little to the right. Face up! Move just a bit more to the right if you can... no not that much. Yeah yeah, right there! Now smile for me."
I wondered who came up with the idea of picture-taking. And worst, who decided this already evil activity must be accompanied with a bright, usually fake, smile!
I smile an awful lot. Sometimes it comes from a simple word that another says to me without even being aware of its effect. Or in moments of extreme boredom, I have been known (well maybe not known as no one else is aware when it happens) to construct an internal dialogue or reflect on an inside joke. On those occasions, my face will usually split in two for what appears to be no reason, causing many to question my sanity.
But try to get me to smile for a picture, and you'll be very lucky if it actually happens. Somebody told me that in one photo I just "look confused". I actually found that hillarious. Who knows, maybe I was confused about something at the time.
Smiling is probably one of the most natural things humans can do. Blind folks prove this, as we've never seen a smile and can make one when they are called for. But I think the best smiles originate from within rather than from an outside force. I have to really be feeling it. So don't make me stand with my leg in the air or my back contorted into some impossible shape and ask me to paste one on. And for goodness sakes, put down that camera already!
