Once Upon a Time 3.20 - Kansas

I'm late this week because my friend's TV kept cutting out at pretty key parts during the show. But I got to watch tonight, so here are some thoughts.

We learned a little more about Zelena, but I still don't give a rat's ass about her. I mean, she got a pretty sweet offer from Glinda and the other witches to join their little coven, and she still couldn't get over her jealousy, this time of Dorothy. I don't know why I thought that maybe this time we'd get to see a little something deeper with Zelena, but I did. And sadly, I was disappointed.

We did, however, get to see a nice twist to the normal story in that the Wicked Witch was not defeated by a splash of water. She did turn into glass when Rumple stabbed her, which was interesting. I feel like I've read a version of that story, but I can't remember if it was a fairy tale or some other story. Or, quite possibly, I completely made it up.

What I really enjoyed was Regina making her own destiny in producing light magic to defeat Zelena. I know I've said it before, but Regina's story arc has really been great. She has made herself into a hero, but she still retains her "fuck with me and I will end you" edge, which was on perfect display when she threatened to crush Zelena's heart if Zelena didn't make use of the offer of the second chance.

Now I'm left wondering what the ending meant. After Zelena was crushed, the broken pieces seemed to vanish and suddenly her pendant started oozing green smoke. Then it rushed to where the crop circle Zelena had Rumple dig and opened the time travel portal, or at least what we're all assuming is a time travel portal. I'm not convinced that it isn't something else, though. What it is, I'm not sure. I feel like it must go to a different land, maybe. And apparently Emma gets sucked off into it, based on previews.

But I digress. So does the opening of the portal indicate that Zelena could always open the portal because that is her version of the ruby slippers, or in our show's case, gold slippers? So she had the power to go wherever in her heart this whole time, and she just had to go on a journey to figure it out, much like Dorothy in the movie? It gives credence to Glinda's line about Zelena and Dorothy being very much alike.

In any case, we'll find out next week in a two-hour season finale. I'm excited to see where we'll head off to next season and what will happen to bring us to that point.

And now I'm off to watch more Game of Thrones. *shakes fist at queeberquabbler*
