Salvation

I've been in the studio a lot lately... thinking about the show coming up in February.  For that show, I'm only going to bring sculptural items.

It's funny, because in order to produce work that I feel good about, I have to block out all feeling stressed about the show, or thinking about what people might enjoy seeing... so that I can end up with ( Read more... )

Hi John,

Your post inspired a few thoughts...

The first is that going into a space of solitude and not letting one's self be influenced by other artists and comparing is a great way to step into your own void for creativity. it feels lonely sometimes. But you have here or ebsqart to feed the part of us all that needs human contact.

Secondly,

I too have bee using religion as a muse. I have many influences in my life regarding religion. I have the influence of being brought up Christian and also of having art history classes where the great cathedrals just put me in awe. I love the cathedrals of New York and the small one at Princeton University near me. I posted a new drawing of its interior the other day on artsomofo. I have the influence of Buddhism and even Hindi. And then I have been around Judaism in people's homes that I clean.

My religious beliefs would seem on the surface to be eclectic however there is one core belief of a connectedness of all people and living things and even space and objects. in Hindi and Buddhist terms that is called prana. In China that is called chi. American Indians would call it spirit. Christians call it the Holy Spirit. Each is a little different but the essence is the same.

I've been engaged in religious and spiritual inquiry a lot lately and have also, like you, been thinking of combining it in art.

I PM'd you a couple of months back inviting you to meet me at St. Thomas' Cathedral in NYC sometime. That still holds but if you would rather do it alone because you are engaged in the process for yourself with the Baltimore show then I invite you to go alone. It is a very spiritual experience to go there. I think you would like it and if it's not too far from your work then it is good. I believe it is on 5th Avenue above Rockefellar Center on the same side and below Columbus Circle a couple of blocks.

If you want to see someting else very spiritual and beautiful, go to my blog and see what I posted yesterday about a Zen Buddhist temple in Japan. It's easy to find.

Good luck with the inward journey.

Diana
