Alien Vs Predator - Requiem For Narrative Cinema

Dear God. Let's get down to brass tacks here. This is an incredibly poor film. The writing is from the fifth moon beyond irredemable, the direction is murky, the characters don't register and the plotting verges on the surreal. In many ways it resembles another sequel to une film de Paul WS Anderson: the awful Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

Yet AVP-R was absolutely the most entertaining 90 minutes I've spent at the cinema in a long time. Shameless, shameless trash that treats you like the brain dead whore that you know that you are. If you are on the side of the civilians in the film, and try to empathise with their plight you will probably end up feeling fairly unsatisfied/angry. If you side with the Predator and understand it from his point of view, it's much more entertaining.

You see, this Predator isn't out for glory. He's not out for the hunt. This film is essentially about a Predator's office job. You can empathise with the relentless monotony he has to put up with, chuckle as he levels a power plant because he doesn't know any better and feel a rush of satisfaction when he obliterates any of the tiresome cardboard meatbags that get in his way.

Special effects are fine. The Predator looks great, the aliens look great and the, uh "Predalien" also looks pretty cool. Lots of people die, mainly in entertaining ways. Most of these, needless to say, you have seen in the trailer. The heartless choices that the movie takes in offing characters is appreciated because 1) you don't care one iota and 2) It's really, really funny.

I can't recommend this film. You should go see it immediately.
