What is up with telemarketers, anyway?

This morning, some schmuck called me offering some preposterous deal--fellow wants to sell me unlimited calls from any land lines for just 10 pounds a month, piggybacking off my existing BT account. All he needs is verbal consent from myself. I tell him no. He persists. I say goodbye and put the phone down. Now I wish I'd said many other things as well. You can guess which ones.

What gets me is that, when he called this number, he knew the name of one of the people living in this building. And that he connected it, even tangentially, with the number. Where are these people getting their information, and is there anything we can do about it?

In other news, by the way:

Apparently, they've created something that looks like a black hole at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Now, that's science-fiction today.
