He isn’t exactly sure what possessed him to do it. He’d only talked to the girl a couple times online, and she seemed nice and all, but he didn’t know her very well. But, she was in town, and he’d just happen to invite her over for dinner. He said he'd cook

She paused in her eating to regard him for a moment and chewed on her bottom lip. "Was he? What about your mom, didn't you want to go back there?" It's not like she is blaming him, she knows full well the feeling of not wanting to go back home.
Bowing her head she went back to eating and shrugged at his comment, "I like listening to other people, because I am really kind of boring." Taking a drink of her water she thought about her family and how much of the truth she'll tell him.
"Well, I'm living with my grandparents because my mom is sick and my dad is in jail." Twirling the fork around her fingers she pushed at the tofu. "I have a little . . . boy, his name is John Baptiste. He'll be two soon, my dad wouldn't let me give him up, so he was raising him." Surprised at her own honesty, even if she lied a bit, she blushed a bit before continuing quickly, "it's really weird and complicated."

He became a little bit somber. "Yeah, I did, but after a while I forgot I did. So I didn't." Might not sound like an explanation to her, he knows, but it does to him. "I only saw her once again after that."
"I... oh," John said, blinking. "I'm sorry to hear about your parents. I'm really sorry to hear about your mom." There was a reason he only saw his mom once more, and his heart genuinely goes out to the girl. "And, a son? Really? Where's he now, if you're dad's in jail?"

"Thanks, I mean she's not dying, she's just mentally disturbed, I hope she'll get well one day. I have hope that she'll get better." Giving him a big grin she nodded quickly. "Oh, he's with me and our grandparents. Would you like to see a picture of him?" She's already reaching back into her pocket to get her cell phone. Salome is really very proud of Jonba, especially now that she doesn't have to hide him.
Leaning forward she offered him a picture of a blond boy with big brown eyes on the screen of her cell phone.

He tilted his head to the side. "I'm sorry to hear that about your mom," he offered. "I hope she gets better."
He looked at the picture and smiled. "Cool," he said. Which might not be the most appropriate description of a child - cute or sweet or something would be, but John's not very good with that sort of stuff. "Must have been hard, being such a young mom, huh? I mean, I bet it helps to have help from your family."

"I know she'll get better, she just needs the right help," she responded optimistically before turning back to the cell phone, shrugging she tucked the phone back into her pocket.
"I guess, I had to quit school so no one would know, but after he was born my dad took care of him. He always wanted a son so I guess it was natural." Chewing on her bottom lip she was silent for a moment before eating some more, it really was good. "I guess it was kind of lonely."

John ate more of his stirfry before he asked, "Did you help take care of him too, or like, did you get to focus on other things, like going back to school?" He found it pretty interesting, that was so different then the way his teen years went, and he couldn't even imagine having a child at that age.

"But things are different, you can't take care of a little kid when you are dead, can you? He should really have thought that through."
