"A man who won't die for something is not fit to live." (Martin Luther King Jr.)
Pyro looked at the reflection in the mirror and knew he was looking at a dead man.
He's known this, for a long time, and had willingly accepted it.
He realized shortly after he first joined the Brotherhood. Someone who was so willing to fight so hard for what one believed in, sacrifice so much, had to throw his life into the pot. He had a sense of pride, then, knowing and accepting that he was willing to do anything for his cause, including die for it. That, right there, meant something. Made him something more.
Then something change in his life - someone. Doug Ramsey, followed by love. Something inside him shifted, changed, and without even consciously being aware, Pyro gave his life and soul to someone else, rather than to the Cause.
But, Pyro learned the hard way, that his life and soul couldn't be split into two like that. Couldn't belong to the Brotherhood and Doug. It caused to much pain, too much strife, too much wavering. For Doug, he was set up for murder, thrown into some holding facility to be forgotten about, and then busted out (by Pyro, no less) and made to live his life like a fugitive. And the Brotherhood, they didn't get their focused, loyal soldier, just a love sick young man meandering about while trying to decide what he wanted.
Presented, an option. Give up one to save the other. Spy on the Brotherhood, turn them in. Set Doug free, in more ways than one. Pyro took the bargain, selling out the Brotherhood to save Doug. He finally made that choice.
Pyro traded one piece of his heart for another, and was forced to give it all away.
They would not stand for this, the Brotherhood. Traitor, betrayed, dirt beneath their feet. They'd find him, eventually, catch up and make him pay.
He's known this, for a long time, and had willingly accepted it.
Pyro looked at the reflection in the mirror and knew he was looking at a dead man.
