I've gone for years thinking that an RSVP meant that you only had to reply if you were going to attend. I learned today that it means you need to reply regardless of whether or not you'll be there. Where did I ever get my old understanding? And who else agrees with me that it's an anachronism? Not the idea that you should tell the host whether or not you'll be there, but how the host asks for it?
