I'd get terrified and run out of the room whenever the Civil Defense mark would show up on the TV. My brothers thought it was hilarious. Apparently, it used to freak out a lot of people.
Nowadays, the thing that's really startling is when, in the middle of a TV show, the audio is interrupted with BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! "This is a test of the Emergency Alert System" BAA! BAA! BAA!
It's especially startling when you fall asleep with the radio or television on, and they decide to run the test in the middle of the night.

And, because I can't resist, "No matter where you go, there you are."
