First day at Morehead....the story begins.

Aug 19, 2005 20:18

Well let me just say that I was born and bred for the trumpet studio here at Morehead.

This has possibly been one of the best times I've ever had just being worn out. We didn't even march or play as an ensemble yet, but I've sure had fun so far.

First off, let me say that rain storms suck ass. I got all dirty and muddy today trying to get my stuff loaded into DeAnna's car. That was the worst part of the day. Then the trip...

The trip wasn't bad at all! Just a little bit of whiny DeAnna because she was tired, but then again she had no sleep the night before so I babied her. We finally arrived at Morehead and did a bunch of bullshit I'm going to skip. Let me skip to the part where I move in.

Well turns out my dorm room is a ton bigger than what I thought (and by the way I'm online in my room if you didn't notice). I could lay down width wise in the space in the middle of the room between Jake's bed and mine. My closet is to the left as soon as you get in our room, and my bed is all the way up to the closet (it is open, not one with doors) because I had to do this to scoot my computer desk closer to the ethernet outlet. This will be remedied once I get a 50 foot ethernet cord, or something like that. Anyways, plenty of room in here, and it's not that bad.

Good news! Jake isn't so bad either. I was worried, but I actually kind of like him. He's friendly, and when I said I wasn't quite sure where Fulbright Rehearsal hall was in Baird (it's actually the first rehearsal hall in the building, can't miss it, I just didn't know that was the name of it lol). Well I was like 3 minutes from being late from freshman orientation. He jumps up, puts on sandals, and runs with me all the way to Baird to help me find the place. That was pretty awesome.

Anyways, let me also say that I know my R.A. for my floor. Josh Horn, who went to SCHS. The only problem I have is that he told me today that I could, and I quote, "Skip the band stuff to go to the freshmen orientation parties". Little did he know that I don't want to go to any damn parties, I'm freaking fine with the band stuff. So I call Dr. Creasap and ask her about it, and she says, and I quote, "Marching Band always wins on this campus. If we have rehearsal, you come to it, and are excused from anything and everything". I then proceeded to tell her I like it that way and she laughed and said, "Yeah, it's a great place to be. Band always wins here."

I think I'm in Heaven.

So I go to freshman orientation which ended up her telling us a bunch of stuff about marching band (all the freshmen and transfer students), me (and everyone else, too), standing up in front of probably 60 kids or so, and saying our names, where we come from and what band, what instrument we play, and why we chose MSU. Mine and practically every trumpet player there said "My reason for coming is, of course, Greg Wing". Haha.

Then, we broke up into sections, and everyone went and met their section leader. Mine is Rickey Spears, and he's a really nice guy.

Here's a little bit about all the freshmen trumpet players (by the way I haven't heard any of them play):

Chris - Probably the most interesting person I've ever met. When we all introduced ourselves, he spoke in a Spanish accent, or something. He really acts stupid, but seems slightly intelligent. He is very, very weird. I don't really like him because most of his jokes aren't funny and he just craves attention.

Josh Breckenridge - Everyone keeps talking about him like he's a really good trumpet player. He seems intelligent, and quiet. Him and I talked more to each other than we did to anyone else. I hung out with him at All-State (he was only like 2 chairs below me, or like 5, I don't remember, but he was in Symphonic Band). Josh is nice, and I have a feeling we'll end up trading off on the routine a lot.

Will - The guy from Male. Louisville Male, that is. He seems well versed in trumpet stuff. He didn't say much, so I can't say if I like or dislike him.

The rest don't really matter to me right now. I want to hear them all play!

I saw Mr. Wing today and he said that Josh Breckenridge and I are going to most likely be the only two freshmen on first part. WOW. I'm so excited. Tomorrow morning at 9 we play for Mr. Wing individually in his office. I really hope I do well and that this goes through. First part...I would be ECSTATIC! And he didn't say it like "Well we think we might put you.."...it was more like "I believe Ricky and I worked out that out of the freshmen it will be you and Josh on first part". I really hope so. Wish me luck, guys...I'm getting up at about 6:30 to go warm up in the morning.

Speaking of playing, I played for about an hour before orientation, and met one of the other trumpet players that practiced a lot, Joey, I think his name is....argh, I can't really remember. He's really nice. I talked to him after orientation and asked him what time Baird 'officially' closed. And he was like, "Well, 'officially', it closes at 11. But you see those doors over there?" and he points to a set of doors on the side of the building. "When the building is locked, you can jerk the left door really hard and it will open. The only thing they can do to you is kick you out and take your name, and nothing can happen to you, as long as you're not doing anything really illegal. I've been kicked out of Baird after hours probably 40-50 times". Wow. That is dedication. I love it here.

I could go on and on about how much I love this place. But I won't. Instead, I'm going to go play trumpet at 8:30 in the evening with other trumpet players *BECAUSE WE CAN*. Hell yeah.

Later all.

PS - Message me whenever you see me online...I get lonely up here :( The room is kind of quiet with nobody in it, and dark. Well anyways, trumpet time, later all!!!!

=)
