Kim smiles her thanks and makes a mental note to only have one glass of wine tonight, two at the most. She doesn't mind at all going out with John, she just doesn't want to mess up what they've begun. She likes it too much, although she finds that she still blushes and feels turned on whenever she thinks about that night...

Carter notices a slight blush touch her cheeks, and isn't sure if he's grateful or annoyed that the waiter interrupts at that moment to take their drink order. He orders a bottle of wine and asks for two waters.

As soon as the waiter moves away from the table, Carter reaches across to pat Kim's hand. "You have the softest skin..."

She blushes a bit more, and then even more at the idea of blushing like a girl. It's not as if she's never been complimented by a man before, or that she didn't have a lot of boyfriends in high school and college. Just something about John, but with Trey still fresh in her mind she is ashamed and just doesn't trust herself.

But for now she offers a lighthearted laugh, hiding her consternation. "I don't know why. I don't do anything particularly special to it."

"Well, you're lucky then." He smiles. "So, how's Leo? He wasn't upset you were going out without him, was he?"

She shakes her head, relieved the change the subject. "No, he's fine with Mama. Really, that therapist you told me about is doing a lot of good, I think. His nightmares aren't as frequent, and I think knowing... knowing that his father isn't here anymore helps too. God. That sounds so awful."

"I know." Carter nods with understanding. "But...he knows first hand how...terrible his father was. But...I think he's all the stronger for it. I mean...no one shoul have to go through anything like that, especially not a child, but...Leo is a brave boy. He's going to be a fine young man someday, Kim."

"I hope so. We won't know for a while how all of this has affected him. He's still so young, so innocent really even after all he's been through. But I'll let you know how things are going when he's a teenager. Of course, I expect I'll still know you then."

"I certainly hope so." He's still stroking the back of her hand, and is suddenly aware of the connection there. He smiles at her. "I'm hoping to maintain a lifetime relationship with you and Leo."

She looks down at their hands and she knows she's lost, no matter whether they should take it slow or not. But that doesn't mean she has to say anything to him about it; she doesn't want to push him away, although there are his words... his words...

"I hope that too, John." She lifts her eyes to his again. "Really."

The waiter returns with their drinks, and Carter nods and thanks him. As soon as he's walking away, Carter's attention is drawn back to Kim and her beautiful, perfect skin. He catches himself wondering then what their children would look like, but he pushes the thought away and only smiles at her.

"How is Leo getting around? Is his leg healed? I was thinking I'd like to take him to the park. And you too, of course."

"Oh yes. I forgot to tell you? His cast is off and he's practically as good as new. The leg is a little weak but the doctor said he just needs to use it and it won't be long before you can't even tell he was hurt. At least physically. He'd love the park, I know that for a fact. And I guess we'd better hurry before it gets too cold up here."

"Great. How's this weekend look for you? I'm not scheduled to work Saturday." He smiles. "I could use a day to just relax. And the park is perfect for it. I love to swing. Ever since I was a kid.

"Sure, this weekend is fine." She smiles at him, then looks a bit trouble. "You know, I hope this doesn't sound awful to say but I'm starting to feel kind of restless. I'm used to working, sometimes too much, and I was already aware I should maybe cut back a bit before all this happened, but now... not working at all..." She shrugs, feeling a little guilty.

"Have you thought about what you want to do? I mean...are you going to go back to Boston? Or...you know, my offer still stands, I know people in this town. Even some lawyers." He grins. "I could throw your name around, see what's available..." Because the truth is I don't want you to leave, and if you were to go back to Boston, there's very little to keep me here in Chicago and I just might have to follow you...

"Oh yes, I was planning to stay here. I've thought about it and I've even told Jordan. Leo seems happy here, and he's making friends and things. Boston... I love Boston and I'm from Boston but right now it holds too many unpleasant memories. I'm ready to try something new and Leo is too. We've talked."

Carter nods. "Good. Well, you know you're welcome to the house as long as you want it. I'm glad you've decided to stay. Chicago kind of grows on you after a while, doesn't it?"
