Rob Vrana; Friend, Son, Fiance

Jan 27, 2012 11:51

I left Kristen's house on sunday after feeling like crap, so I went to bed pretty early that night but woke up to a missed call from Dave and a text reading:
"Call me asap"
Well despite being 2 in the morning, right now is as ASAP as you're gonna get, so I called him. He answered in his 'someone died' voice and my mind started racing over who it could be and what I would do in each of those scenarios. I would have never imagined that Vrana was going to be the answer. My initial thought was "thank god it wasn't Andrea or Chris" which I'm admittedly very ashamed of. But I started thinking about his parents and his fiance and began to worry about them way before having any other feelings. I got off the phone with Dave and was mostly trying to figure out how to tell my parents and what I should do about it. The story was that he died from ODing on sleeping pills he was prescribed. From what I could gather from 3rd hand information (Rebecca told Dave) it wasn't on purpose. He'd been taking these things for a while and had built up a tolerance, so to ensure they worked that night, he took a lot (as a side note I learned that tolerance doesn't change the LD50).
From there I started thinking about how I spent my birthday with him, and just wishing I had taken some pictures while I was there or something. Thinking to myself how I should have seen it coming based on his lifestyle and general nonchalant attitude toward drugs, specifically ones that were never meant to be used that way.
"If I'm broke but I want to get high, I'll take like a whole bunch of caffeine pills"
That should've been my tip off, I should have said something, but who knows if he woulda listened, he wasn't dying then. And that's the other thing, there wasn't ANYTHING wrong with him then, he was full of life and hope and all the things one's come to expect from Vrana.

The next day (monday) became hard, I couldn't take my mind off it, I HAD to find out where the funeral was, I didn't trust my 3rd hand stance was gonna allow me to get all the info. I could barely bring myself to work (like right now) but things needed to be done. I was hoping that the wake and stuff would be after my parents left so I wouldn't have to tell them. But alas, the wake would be Wednesday and the funeral... ended up being the next morning as one would expect but I didn't find out till much later. If I was going to get everything that I should do (buy flowers, pictures etc.) before 4 on wed, I should leave tuesday.

I was able to get myself together to leave WHB by 2 so I could get up there before rush hour. I never went to work that day though, partially because Nicole never told me when she'd be there. But that's irrelevant. I'd been feeling sick that day, I wasn't hungry, but I was in Mahopac, I was going to make it to the wake and funeral. Step 1 accomplished.
