36 days until the bike box hits the conveyor belt...
One thing that was not listed on my 'Things I am Scared of' list was the fear of aimless, apathetic wandering. Hence, I am in need of a theme. This, I am hoping, will give some form of 'direction' to our travels. Currently our theme is 'Shit! Stay away from the snow!'... but I think maybe we need something a little more... affirmative.
Options I am tossing around include:
- Travelling in the footsteps of famous writers (but really... I am willing to bet my left rear pannier that you can't name a famous Estonian poet)
- Exploring different wine regions of Europe, and tasting and rating the wine. I have vivid memories of Duncan and I hunting down a (surprisingly reasonable) bottle of red in Paris for under one euro. In order to do this successfully, though, I think we would require sponsorship!
- The journey to become a one-pot gourmet. Our cooking equipment that we are bringing with us involves a stove that you can fit into the palm of your hand - hell, into the palm of an eight-year-old's hand - and a small pot. I know that one thing I will miss is being able to cook a massive, complex Indian or Moroccan feast for my friends, and so I am interested to see how my skills will develop from cooking two-minute-noodles with some added dehydrated peas for a bit of a vitamin hit.
- The hunt for local and wild produce. Dunc and I have recently watched the BBC show 'The Wild Gourmets' and I am inspired by the ability to know which leaves, berries, fungi, etc are edible. This would be great, though perhaps at times a little risky!
It makes it difficult that we already have our route planned, but there is really nothing to stop us from diverting where necessary! Oh, except the need to avoid snow...
