Since something odd has happened in Pispala (don't ask me what, this is just what the bus company said) the traffic is jammed so the busses aren't moving hence why I'm writing this now. I'm supposed to be in the coaching class (which I despise btw) but since I can't get my ass from Nokia to Tampere I'm spending quality time with Paavali. Even my dear relatives with whom I'm supposed to live here can't help me coz they're in Paris. But don't think I doidn't give my best effort to get into the class, no, I stood on the buss stop for an hour. In that time there should've gone two busses but instead me and an elderly couple saw none. And even though it may seem like it's incredibly warm outside, tryst me, after you've stood still for an hour in that horrific wind it's not warm at all. So the only reason why I know even this much about the situation is due the man getting so annoyed that he called the bus company. Now I'm sitting comfortably at Emma's bed after I warmed my insides with meatballs and taco sauce waiting for mom and Arttu to come and take me home. And yes, there's as no other food in the house that wouldn't bite back then meatballs and taco sauce. Yam.
So that I have some unexpected free time there's no way I'm going to waste it in studying, no, I'm going to do something I told
kasumi24 a while I'd do: my review of Avril Lavigne's new album. I've had it for a little over a week now so I feel confiding in sharing my thoughts with you. And yes, this will include pictures.
The album cover -mine's pink though coz it's the CD/DVD -version. Please don't ask about the DVD, I havn't had tim eto watch it yet.
First, before saying anything about the album itself I'd like for you to pay some attention in what has happened in the past years. Avril started out as an angry skater-punk-tomboy who had ties, army pants and a lot of attitude and opinions about other female artist and their looks. Her first hits from the album Let Go were Complicated, Ska8r Boi and I'm with you. These were more or less energetic guitar pop with rather simple lyrics, nothing too heavy or verbally brilliant, safe and fun. And the audience loved it and loved her.
Then with the next album Under My Skin a darker, moodier Avril was presented -and she was wearing skirts. Nothing classy, more punk-like clothes with mostly black and red etc. Also her music was heavier and tle lyrics also had become more serious but the happy skate-punk was not forgotten either. Hits from this album were Don't tell me, He wasn't, My happy anding and Nobody's home. Still one of my favourite Avril-songs is My ahppy ending, it has power to it. The darkness of the album had a lot to do with Avril's personal life: she broke up with her current band who was a guitarist in her band (I can never remember which one) and she was also going through a lot of emotional dilemma's that come with reaching -or beginning to reach- adulthood.
Before this new album, The Besy Damn Thing Avril's life and career have gone through several changes. She has treid for example modeling and acting. She also go tmarried last summer to the lead manof a Canadian punk-rock band Sum41, Deryck Whibley. Before this album was released Avril herself said that she wanted to do a funny, joyful album because she doesn't only want to sing her old sad and angry songs anymore since she doesn't feel that way now. She also said that the album is named this way since she thinks this is her best album yet -but that's what they always say. Saying "yeah, my new album is ok, but not my favourite" would be incredibly bad marketing.
So during the years she has come from this... ...to this. Good or bad? You decide.
Once you actually get over the metamorphosis Avril has gone through you can see that the The Best Damn Thing is in fact not a bad album at all. Except for you all who hated the first single from the album, Girlfriend, you won't like this. With this album Avril returnes to the path guided by Ska8r Boi and He wasn't. Only three out of the twelve songs are slow, and not even those are trying to be depressing, they're more optimistic and even romantic. (Keep holding on had actually been published soem time ago in the Eragorn OST.) Of course, since this is still the Avril we know, there are some very angry songs ("I wish you were her/you left out the "E"/ you left without me/ and now you're somewhere out there wtih a bitch, slut, psychopath...") even these songs have a very positive beat -so if you feel like angsting this is not for you.
TBDT has some real pearls in it, some songs that really move you, one way or teh other: Innocence gives you happy-chills especially when you listen to it in a bus in the middle of the night. Runaway makes you want to climbe out from the window (a door would way too easy) and ditch you're studying and future. The Best Damn Thing (yes, there's a song named that) is a real self-confidence booster once you get over the wannabe-cheerleading-kinda-shouting-part. Everything back but you let's you burst out all your frustrations no matter what they're about. You can clearly see the influence Deryck has on his wife in Everything back but you that has the fast drum beat typical to Sum41. (Deryck did has his part in especially making this song, and the whole album. You can't be married to a musician without picking up something. Besides, hasn't it been said that after a while all married couples begin to resemble each other?) When you're gone and Girlfriend -especially after seeing the video- have the strongest personal meaning to me but still I can't name a favourite song from the album. The preferred song depends completely on the moment and you're state of mind -the situation can change in five minuets.
All in all, TBDT is excatly what Avril promised: fun. It's more punk-pop than the previous albums and it also seems more shallow when you ust listen to it -and why not, do we really need every artist to be like U2 constantly worrying about the state of the world? TBDT is perfect fo rthe upcoming summer: it's light and makes you bouncy and makes you believe that perhaps blondes do have more fun than the others without being cheesy, the attitude is still there. However, it's impossible to say whether the album is actually better then the previous, they're all so different. The on advantage that TBDT has compared to the other albums that every song is listenable, you don't want to rewind any of them -unless you're going for a certain state of mind. If you're looking for something cheerful fro your day, TBDT just might be the answer.
A cute couple , but Avril's look makes me scream "WTF?". The harvest of TBDT -photoshoot.
And if anyone has listened to this album or ay least some songs from it, I'd be more than glad to hear what you thought. ^^
