As it turns out, I'll be needing a car for my work. The initial idea was to live around Vine Street in Kalamazoo and walk/take the bus to the group home where I'll be working. But ROI will have me move around to different homes until I find the right "fit", so there will have to be wheels.
This is fine, of course. I've been scoping out a few rides of varying cost. I want something that will survive the winter and the 30 minute commute that I'll initially be making while living with Uncle Mike and Aunt Wanda in Lawton.
So to this end I have brought home a Mercury Sable for an overnight test drive. It is overpriced by about 2K, so we will see what happens tomorrow. I think it likely that I may go with a 92 Ford Taurus owned by a friend of the family. In anycase, I left grandpa Ralph's Lincoln overnight at the dealership while I check out this car.
I've been caring for Ralph for a month and a half now. We occasionally have the "Where did you take my car?!" conversation; Ralph is 92 and no longer able to drive. I use his car for my errands around town. Cars have been a big part of Ralph's life, and he is unable or unwilling to give the idea of driving. We've had to deal with this a couple times because of his memory loss.
I got home from the dealership around 5:30, very tired, and did not want to open that particular can of worms. So instead of trying to explain that I'd done something with his car I just went inside. Perhaps one green sedan in the driveway would be just as good as another. Of course, this was not the case, and we soon had an uncomfortable little exchange. "WHAT'VE YOU DONE WITH MY CAR!?"
I gave a simplified explanation and then went about serving dinner, waiting for him to forget his agitation. (Ralph's dementia sometimes creates and then just as suddenly erases problems)
For this weekend; a trip to South Haven to look at Paul's Taurus. For tonight, sleep.
