On the shooting..

No details yet about the how or why of the Blacksburn rampage. I'm willing to bet that things won't be the same after today---32 people is just too many to continue "life as usual". Serious changes, to campus security, to gun sales procedures, or whatever else may have contributed, are imminent in the wake of this thing.

I met with the campus libertarians tonight--my first time to that group's meeting since I came to school here--and they decided to say something publicly about how they support full 2nd Amendment rights, including on university campuses (which are, after all, public property) because if someone else had had a gun, someone could have shot the attacker and everyone would not have been helpless.

NOTICE I did not share my personal beliefs in that short thing, so don't go harrassing me or anything, I'm just reporting what a group on campus is doing. It's a fact. Like saying lime J-ello is green. If you don't like it, too bad, it's green.

I've always thought that the idea that "An Armed Society is a Polite Society" is bull...just look at LA or East St.Louis. Not that I am against personal gun ownership. My stance is this; every freedom we enjoy in the United States, such as driving, drinking alcohol, raising our children as we see fit, and investing our own money, comes with a price. With the freedom to buy firearms, that price is occasional gun violence.

Reading now about that kid identifying himself as "?" in class and never speaking to anyone, it makes me wish that someone, at some point, had reached out to him and maybe averted this whole thing.

Indeed. I was talking with a friend about just that thing. With a lot of head issues there is usually something that triggers a change in people. People usually mean that in the sense of going from OK to bad, but I think if something different had happened, the trigger could have gone another way and helped the kid not get to that point ( ... )

As my old business law professor said, "Still waters run around campus in the nude".
