Back from leave! Its was too short tho! So i went to kyoto for 3days and 2 nights. Kyoto is the old capital of japan so there are many temples surrounding the city.
Maki and i took off from yokohama, around 10:30am, riding the bullet train. The train ride was nice, and it only took 2 hours to get there. On the first day we went to a pretty big market to shop alittle, i got some spice for the parents back home, but there were alot of cool things there. After running around there in the intense heat we decided to just head back to the hotel, eat dinner and relax for the rest of the evening. The next morn we took a romantic train ride that trailed alongside a river. From the drop-off point of the romantic train we bought tickets to ride a boat on the river back to the train station. It was getting about lunch time and we decided to walk around getting souvenirs and look for some stuff to munch on. We saw a fan shop and found out that they will let you paint your own fan paper up and make it into a fan and send it to you in about a month. Maki was disappointed with hers but i thought it was nice . Mine was a boat commanded by two japanese gentlemen on the river we had just rode. Afterwords we went to the temple closest to us. Most temples are generally the same.. nice gardens, white old building, well just japanese looking. This one though is pretty famous for the fact that one building is three stories and the 2nd and 3rd's exterior are made from gold leaf and gold trimming. Giving the allusion that its completely mae from gold, really cool looking. Third day we went to a few more temples one with 1001 identical statues and a few other statues. This temple is where the great musashi killed alot of monks.. well my squadrons mascot is musashi, so I really wanted to go check it out. We also went to the old emperor's home, that had its own allure to it as well. The next evening we went out on a dinner boat for 2 hours, which we had reserved a month and a half ago. 14 of us went out ate dinner and drank in tokyo bay, did some karaoke and just had a good time. So all in all i had a really good birthday week. Maki bought me a shirt that had Joe in japanese on the front and ramon on the back, plus she got me a hand held electronic english to japanese dictionary, really cool little gadget.
I will include pics of the trip in a later e-mail.
