Aw, hell yeah.

(Prolly don't want to watch this at work if your boss has a problem with the F-bomb.)

I've got a Vampire (Salon) LARP tonight, an Heroic Fantasy (Boffer) LARP tomorrow, and I keep my polyhedral dice in my truck just in case a spontaneous, impromptu game of D&D erupts at the 7-11 ( Read more... )

Been larping for ages!

My first larp was a hybrid Traveller game at a con in Melbourne in '84. A group of us did 1930's era Murder Mystery games for a while in the late 80's, then I took a bit of a break before getting into Vampire. Lately, although I still have an active character in an One World By Night larp, I find that the Heroic Fantasy genre is becoming my favorite.

Some of the folks in my tabletop group have the same feeling as you when it comes to larping. Excellent roleplayers all, plus Ren Faire gigging experience, etc... but there is some kind of mental hurdle that they need to clear before being willing to immerse themselves in larping.

I'm also surprised that more actors who are sci-fi/fantasy geeks don't larp. Seems like a natural progression.

And I'm hopeful that the hobby becomes as popular here someday as it seems to be in Europe. Every picture I see of Euro larps looks like pictures of something like SCA's Great Western War, but with dragons.

And thanks for including me in the "younger generation" - you've only got two years on me! :) I think the tradition will be kept alive for ages if yesterday's game was any indication. We're kid friendly, and actually had a very young man in his yoda costume (minus the mask) RPing as a person with inate healing magic. For such a young guy he did really well, and was very accepted by the group. I think our age range spans single digits to early 60's now!

Thanks, and I enjoy your posts as well. (Your description of truck drivers being self-reliant resonated. Although I never ran into trouble when I was doing a lot of class B driving, I recently intimidated a road/roid-rage dude by waiting for him to make his move while holding (calmly, I hope) a hatchet... a story which deserves its own post.) I'm very guilty of lurking lately. Best of luck with your current writing projects!
