Hurrah! Sometimes it all just fits!
So, I thought I'd post a Smut!Update.
How's it going?
Well first off, it was going PANTS. And I mean that in the Wallace and Gromit sense of the word, so don't get any ideas... ;)
Initially, I tried writing a PWP Moment In Time kind of piece, but then I stopped myself I thought about how much I hate reading PWP's where the sole aim is quite obviously to get Remus and Tonks into bed and shagging asap... So, then I tried to think of how I could write something where the sex was a bit more of an important part of the plot. And then I stumbled upon an idea. (forgive the lengthy explanation, but I swear it's necessary!)
I loathe with a burning passion fics about multicoloured werepups. They drive me bonkers. I don't have a degree in genetics, but I know enough to be damn sure that lycanthropy couldn't possibly be inherited. It could be a blood toxin in the same way as HIV, but that would mean Tonks would catch it as well, and I don't buy into that camp either. So, in my humble opinion the idea of multicoloured werepups is completely ridiculous.
It is also such a rarity to see a R/T fic where pregnancy and or babies are tackled with any sense of reality. Personally, I find the idea that Remus would agree to a baby on a whim as bizarre considering his quite obvious commitment issues... the only way you could realistically get around that would be to show them several years down the line in a real relationship a la Portkey's 'Simply Red' fic. But even then I struggle with the idea that Remus wouldn't have issues about becoming a father. And Tonks is a young professional as well, and no matter how you look at it, working mums are more likely to be older before they have children. So, to me, any fic where R/T become parents has to be set a few years into the future... which brings with it its own set of problems because the characters are going to have different lives from the ones we've been shown in canon and to some degree, they are going to have changed a bit too... Eek.
I've always wanted to hit back at the dozens of multicoloured werepups fics I've read and actually write a pregnancy story where things were a bit more realistic, and not so long ago I decided to do this. I wrote about 500 words, then stalled and for ages, the fic sat on my hard drive gathering metaphorical dust. I just couldn't get the story to fit around all the parameters I've talked out above. Then, a few days ago, it hit me when my mind was wandering at work... hit me so badly that I was desperate to get home to put my ideas down. This was where the Smut could be...! And hallelujah, it wouldn't have to be OTT inyerface with ostrich feathers n kinky knickers sex either! It could be real sex between two people in a real relationship and the plot... well, the plot could be the pregnancy story I'd always wanted to write.
So I have been busy writing the rest of that story and it's actually coming on okay. As some of you know, I'm never very confident about my fics before I post them, and this one is no different, but I'm pleased because in one fic I've managed to tackle two of my Writing Aims With R/T. And it's quite satisfying. I don't know when I'll be finished, but I'm already thinking there could be scope for a sequel... So, we'll see.
