Disturbing

Almost two years ago, I made a brief post about a book called “Geek Love” by Katherine Dunn, calling it, “the sickest, most twisted, most fascinating, most horrifying book I have ever read.” (I read it over winter break). Last year, I read “Invisible Monsters” by Chuck Palahniuk. It was pretty twisted, but Geek Love still held the title. But I just finished “Haunted” by Chuck Palahniuk, and dude, he has won back the crown.

I have had emotional reactions to books - “The Time Traveler’s Wife” had me in tears on the metro more than once - but I generally have a strong stomach for the written word. This past summer I read an excellent book called “The Gargoyle” by Andrew Davidson, and even though it contained grisly scenes of injury and medical procedure, I was fine. But “Haunted” made me feel physically ill. Reading the book was grueling - I feel like I need to earn a t-shirt to commemorate finishing it. People have literally fainted by hearing a certain excerpt from “Haunted” read out loud - almost seventy of them. I know exactly how they felt.

While I’m on the topic of disturbing things, I meant to share this link a while back: The Seven Most Horrifying Museums on Earth. Best not to look at this late at night.
I feel rather proud that I’ve been to the Mutter Museum. While they had a special exhibit on smallpox and one on Siamese twins (so many babies in jars!) I had a phobia of mummies for YEARS, since I was a little girl all the way until college, and I stared that Soap Lady right in the face!
