A beep a single, solitary beep from my computer, during the POST test that is performed when you start your computer woke me out of my trance like state of euphoria. My computer was telling me that it did not recognize my new drive. Trying to figure out what exactly the issue was I kicked myself when I realized, drives not only need a cable to transfer data but also need a cable to get power.
As I said before SATA drives require a different kind of power cord than the more traditional IDE drives. I looked at the sprawling wires attached to my power supply and was not able to find one SATA power cable, touche computer, touche. My mind immediately focused on the task at hand.
"Well self, it looks like you are going to have to get a new power supply."
I considered myself lucky due to the fact that power supplies, and this is of course based on usage, are generally fairly cheap. There was a computer parts supply store just down the street, so I would be able to get the new supply the next day and get my god like hard drive spinning, or so I thought. Tonight was a different story, I was going to prepare for the upcoming day so all I would have to do the next day would be to attach the new power supply and I'd be off and running.
Tenaciously, I set to work getting my power supply removed from the computer, which required removing both DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives, the disk drive and the microprocessor. (does anyone see where I'm going yet) But why would I have to remove the microprocessor you might think. Well, the microprocessor in my computer has a heat-sync (read big metal dealy) that sticks out about four to five inches from my mother board just below the power supply and therefore it had to go.
Standing there with my power supply in hand I felt a twinge which at first I mistook for accomplishment, later I would learn that, that twinge was actually god preparing to fuck with me for several days, as he/she soooo likes to do. A thought occured to me.
"Ya know, I bet others had run into this same problems before. It seems like a lot of work to have to replace the whole power supply. Someone should come up with a molex (old hard drive power adapter) to SATA converter. That would be really smart. If I wasn't so dumb I bet you I could patent that and make a fortu--"
I stopped in mid thought, launched Firefox and searched for "Molex SATA" and looked on aghast..
