Mourning the Loss of American Dignity
Man, yesterday was a rough day for so many reasons. Super Tuesday, for me, was anything but super. I had been looking forward to a night of celebration. By the end, I felt like I was lying in a fetal position in a dark alley, rolling around in mud and my own blood after a brutal mugging and beating. How did this happen, America? And before anybody decides to get all high-and-mighty on me, I’m going to say this up front - don’t you DARE tell me how to feel or say that I am being overly-dramatic!
I’m not being a sore loser. I have supported presidential candidates in the past who have lost. Was I sad at the time? Yes. But never before did I have the fear - the very real FEAR - that I have now because of the election of the worst presidential candidate that I have ever seen in my lifetime.
This isn’t about party-politics anymore. This isn’t about a man versus a woman. This isn’t about Benghazi or emails or any of the other bullshit that has been spouted in hatred and mud-slinging propaganda anymore. This isn’t about Hillary whatsoever any more. This is about one thing and one thing only - Donald Trump is now our president-elect. And I’m just disgusted! Why? Because America has just elected…
…a man with ZERO political experience and a series of failed business dealings;
…a man who downplays something as egregiously disgusting as “grab her by the pussy” as “locker room talk”. There is no excuse - NO EXCUSE - for this type of behavior EVER! It is an offense against women. It is promotional of sexual violence and assault. It is not ok ever, ever, ever, EVER;
… a man who is LITERALLY in the middle of legal investigation, and facing trial, for rape and sexual assault;
… a man who believes that the best way to deal with foreign nations is to “bomb the hell out of them”. (His words, people!)
… a man who had openly stated that he wants to punish women who seek an abortion;
… a man who considers all Muslims - ALL Muslims - a threat against the United States;
…a man who generalized Mexican immigrants as illegals, drug-dealers, rapists and murderers. (His words, people!)
… a party ticket endorsed by the fucking KKK!!!!!!!!!
…a Vice President who as governor of Indiana promoted THE most anti-LGBT legislature ever including wanting to ARREST same-gender couples who even showed up at the court house to APPLY for a marriage license.
The list could go on and on, but I’m already just sick-to-my-stomach at the disgrace and shame. America---AMERICA --- how, how, how, HOW could this have happened? Through apathy, laziness, and ignorance - that’s how.
FACT - almost half - ALMOST HALF of the registered voters in this country just chose not to vote. I don’t blame Mr. Trump for this. I blame a nation of apathetic voters! HOW COULD YOU THROW YOUR VOTE AWAY? Do you not understand how precious your vote is? Do you not get that most people in the world don’t get such a privilege? Do you realize that the consequence of your apathy is this? I know - I’ve heard it all before - “I don’t like either of them!” Well ya know what? There comes a point where as an adult you have to realize that it isn’t about whether you “like” the person. It is about who you think will do the best job for the nation!
FACT - fact-checking Trump has become a joke. Never in history has a candidate lied so much in his campaigning. Every time he opened his mouth to state something that could actually be researched, it was found to be either an over-exaggeration of the truth, or an out and out lie. He claimed to have received endorsements that he didn’t actually receive. He claimed accomplishments that were not actually his. He made all kinds of slanderous comments about his competitors that were either over-exaggerations or not true at all. Don’t believe me? Check the fact-checkers. (which you should have done prior to voting!)
FACT - a blustering white man has the power to point a finger and make an unfounded accusation about a (woman, black person, gay person, immigrant, someone of a different religion, minority, etc., etc., etc.), and have absolutely NO proof whatsoever; and have a majority of Americans BELIEVE HIM even though it is complete bullshit!
FACT - once again, the Electoral College system is such that the actual popular vote went to one candidate, but the college system elected another candidate. I do not blame Trump for this whatsoever. But I have a HUGE problem with the Electoral College system! In theory, it was designed to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. But it doesn’t accomplish that. It isn’t like it happens to help Jews or black or any other minority be protected from oppressive majorities. It only (somewhat) benefits states. And that makes no sense to me. For cryin out loud - how can we have a president take office after the people have made their decision only to have the result NOT really reflect what the majority of the people wanted? I don’t care if the Electoral College voting results went to Hillary and the popular vote went to Trump. I think the Electoral College system NEEDS TO GO! Because once again, we will be stuck with a president that the majority of voters didn’t want.
FACT - right-wing “family-based” organizations like National Organization for Marriage (a polite term for bigoted homophobic privileged asshats!) have thrown their hat in the ring to support Trump. WHAT A BUNCH OF FUCKING HYPOCRITES! Trump screwed around behind his second-wife’s back with Melania, only to dump his wife and then marry his mistress. SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE, MY ASS!!!!! Now frankly, I personally couldn’t care less about who Trump screws (as long as it is consensual and not because he grabbed her by the pussy!). His marriage is none of my business. But that’s my point! You have organizations out there who believe that MY marriage to MY husband is somehow THEIR business. But they are perfectly content to overlook the marriage-representation of their white (ok, orange), straight poster-child.
I could go on and on, but there just is no point to it. The system and the people have put us in this place, and that is that. I am an American. And I will fight to support the freedom and system that we have, no matter how flawed. And I will accept the results of this election (which is FAR more grace that Mr. Trump deserves given that he refused to accept the results of the election unless it went to him!)
So for those of you out there who are happily gloating because we are on the verge of one party being COMPLETELY in charge of the free-world with control over the house, senate, and White House; have your field-day. Gloat all you want. You wanted it so bad, you got it. You think you can fix things and make things better for America, time will tell. The world is watching.
And I pray for the safety and security of this world! This was a huge step BACKWARD in terms of equality, assurance of safety and rights for ALL Americans, and the safety, security and stability of this place we call Earth. I hope I am wrong, and I want nothing more than to openly admit that I was wrong in four years when we look back…
…if we make it that far.
