as in the google spot.
i know the kids have been talking about this whole gmail thing for quite some time now and i figured i'd give it a shot a while ago. i had 2 other e-mail accounts so i never really explored the gmail thing until tonight.
it started when i was looking for a calendar program to get myself more organized. i was looking into mozilla's sunbird program and it seemed like a solid enough application, but i needed something for on the go. sunbird looked like it had some sort of server storage option. after clicking through several menus on it i decided to look elsewhere, as it appeared to be more of a pain in the ass to get set up than i was looking for. i remembered my g-mail account and knew that google was developing new applications so i figured i'd look into it.
i signed into my g-mail account (which has yet to recieve an e-mail) and right at the top of the page were several other applications. among them was the calendar program.
2 more clicks and i was punching in the dates to all of my exams, projects, martial arts, and work. the interface is clean and easy to use. pick your view (day, week, month, ect.), click on a date, type in your event, add any notes or select any other options (repeat, remind, ect.) and you're done.
want to know when your exams are this semester? type in "exam" in the search bar and hit enter. the application immediatly pulls up all of the events with "exam" in them and arranges them in chronological order.
want a daily agenda waiting for you in the morning? click the "e-mail agenda" option in the calendar and every day at 5 am the application will send you an e-mail with the day's activities.
you can even make multiple calendars with the program and "share" them with your friends, co-workers, classmates, whoever. depending on how you set it up they can have access to add and remove events as well or you can completly manage it on your own.
anywhere you have an internet connection you can access your schedule. while some might just prefer to stick with the pen and paper, i have no desire to carry something like a planner around with me. between home, work, and school i have access to a variety of computers all of which have internet connections, so should i need to access my schedule i could do so within minutes. this is also a great alternative to pda or cell phone calendars, which i've never really been a fan of.
the software is still a beta version, but it is complete enough to manage day to day activities without throwing a million options at you that you don't need. there are some things i'd like to see implemented (or maybe i just haven't discovered them yet), but if you're looking for a quick, simple, and free way to organize your life i'd look into this.
