Cornell University just published a study,
covered by Slate, that finds a statistical link between children watching TV and developing autism. The data they used was the change in autism rates as cable was introduced on the west coast and in Pennsylvania (as it was introduced children tended to watch more television), and they then confirmed the link by comparing autism rates between places with clear skies and places with high precipitation (when it's raining or snowing kids tend to stay indoors and watch TV). A causal link hasn't been found yet - there could be other factors - but they were able to show that in the precipitation comparison a mind popping 40 percent of autism was "the result of television watching."
