For my SoCal visit this past weekend I flew into and out of Long Beach Airport (LGB). It and Burbank are good options to LAX; much smaller and easier to access and navigate.
The 1941 LGB terminal is a great example of Streamline Moderne architecture. Most of the second floor is a bar and restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating facing the taxi area and runways.
