"Daddy? What's a new England?"
Joe looked up from the bass laying across his lap, raising an eyebrow as his daughter stood before him, Snake Plissken's letter still clutched between her hands. "New England...that's where Grandma lives. It's a buncha states like Massachusetts, and Rhode Island..."
"An' Maine?"
Smiling, he reached out and tousled her long, dark curls. "And Maine, yeah."
Colleen grinned and nodded, then went back to her letter, continuing to read it aloud as she had been moments before, while Joe went back to restringing his Jazz. Fortunately, it was still pretty quiet this afternoon...kids were off school early, he was off work tonight, and he only had to shoot Chris one stern look as he made faces while Colleen read her letter to them, stumbling only a little over certain words.
" '...I look for...forward to seeing all the treasures you have in that box. I got one too. Hmmm.. maybe I should bring mine along so you can see what’s in there? What do you think?' Daddy, can I see what's in Snake's treasure box?"
Absently, Joe had to wonder just what kind of 'treasures' a guy like Plissken might have, but carefully kept his thoughts shielded from his son. Tugging his low-end string taut, he answered without looking up. "Sure...no skin off my nose, long as he wants to show you, baby girl."
Colleen giggled, then went back to reading. " 'You can call w...whenever you want. Tell your dad that it is better to call me when I’m at work.' Daddy! I can call him, I can call him!!"
Joe wound the string through the peg, then glanced up with a raised eyebrow. "Come again?"
Realizing her mistake, Colleen grinned bashfully. "*May* I call him, Daddy?"
Nodding, he smiled and shrugged. "Yeah, he says it's okay...you wanna do it right now, I assume?"
"You assume rights."
Laughing, he held up a hand. "Okay, hang on and let me get this string on...damn, what time is it in New York right now..."
"It's six 'o clock PM, Daddy!" Chris offered brightly. "'Cause it's different times zones."
"An' we can't call Grandma after six o' clock in our place, 'cause it's nine o' clock in her place!" Colleen added.
Finishing with the string, Joe carefully laid his bass aside and stood, bending to scoop Colleen up into his arms. "You two are too darn smart for me...all right, there's a chance he might still be at work. If he ain't, you can leave a message, 'kay?"
"Can I dial the numbers?"
"Carefully, baby."
Carrying her into the kitchen, Joe let Colleen sit on the counter as he picked up the cordless phone and waited for Colleen to let him peer at the letter and get the number off the letterhead. "Okay, just dial those numbers, babe...remember to use a one first, then the area code..."
With her tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth in concentration, Colleen took the receiver in her small hands and carefully dialed the number for Snake's shop, bringing the phone to her ear when she was done. "Oooh! It's ringing, Daddy! It's rining!!"
