Exactly 20 years ago, I began my first day of high school. And now, 20 years later, I find myself tutoring high school students (as well as some who are older and younger). I will never forget my first day of high school. I was taking a class in which there was a journal and three essays due on the first day of school. I finished the journal on time but the three essays proved more difficult because I left them to the last minute. I got an A for the journal but I received a D on the three essays. This first day was to portend the rest of my high school years: leaving things to the last minute.
Also, I was still smarting from not being accepted into a presitgious high school to which I had applied. To make matters worse, some of these students would share bus rides with me but had to remain on the bus as we were dropped off first and they then were driven to their school. I cannot say my life was happy in high school. But on my graduation day, I was perhaps one of the happiest graduates there. No more high school. It was time for college. I was ready to turn over a new leaf and start a new life.
