My First Entry in The New LiveJournal Format

May 31, 2014 00:18

So, here is my first entry in the new Livejournal format. Also, it is the last day in May 2014 and I was worried that I might not get an entry in this month. But, here I am. :)

Today is also the 30th birthday of my second livejournal friend . Although she and I do not talk anymore, I still remember her birthday. She remains one of three online friends whose house I have gone to.

I have been reading How Math Explains the World by James Stein. It goes into highly advanced mathematics. Moreover, it also goes into physics and touches upon philosophy and even politics. It states that the three most fascinating discoveries of the 20th Century were Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, Godel's Incompleteness Theorem, and Arrow's Impossibility Theorem. Let me explain a little bit of each.

Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle states that both the position and the velocity of a particle cannot be known with full certainty. In fact, the more we know of one the less we know of the other.

Arrow's Impossibility Theorem states that the voting preferences of voters cannot be accurately translated into the preferences of society. No method of voting can accomplish this.

Godel's Incompleteness Theorem states that no logical system which is consistent is also complete. In fact, a logical system which is both sound and consistent will not be complete.

One result is useful in physics, the second is useful in politics, and the third is useful in logic. But the common thread among them is mathematics. And this is what fascinates me. I must go back to my reading however, I leave my readers with some questions.

Can scientific achievements ever translate into solving political problems such as world hunger, war, crime, disease, famine, and poverty?

Can scientific achievements ever translate into religious knowledge of the meta-physical such as the God Almighty, life after death, and even death itself? Why are so many scientists athiests?

Can religious knowledge be used to advance scientific achievement? Why are so many religious preachers so ignorant to the work of science?
