This morning, I am thinking about how life has changed in the past 10 years. Many things have changed. Ten years ago, we did not have something called Facebook but it was going to start in a few weeks. Also, ten years ago this journal did not exist but was going to be created soon. Speaking of which, the tenth anniversary of this journal is going to happen soon.
Ten years ago, I was very much stuck in college, wondering how I was ever going to finish my degree. I was taking two courses in mathematics at the time: Calculus III and Calculus IV: Introduction to Analysis. It was my last time taking Calculus III because I was going to pass it. But it was my first time taking Calculus IV. Until that point in time, I had never dropped a class before. Calculus IV was going to be the first class I was going to drop. I found the class almost impossible to understand; it was based mostly of proofs.
One of the reasons I hesitated to major in mathematics was because of proofs. And even after I declared my major in math, I still avoided them as much as I could. However, a friend of mine once convinced me that proofs were the fun part of math. Then I began to enjoy them more. I was destined to meet this friend 10 years ago this year.
Speaking of which, I was destined to meet many new friends this year 10 years ago. Ten years ago, I had never taken an interstate drive. But because of another friend I was destined to meet on here, I took my first interstate drive. Ten years ago this year I used gmail for the first time.
Ten years ago, a young man named Barack Obama was aiming to run for the U.S. Senate. Few people outside of Illinois had heard of him. Ten years ago, my father and his parents were still alive. Ten years ago, I had no car and no cell phone. Yes, many things happened in the year 2004. And many things have happened in the years since.
