Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego sing National Anthem at San Diego Padres Game

Jul 08, 2007 22:36

It was an amazing feeling being one of the over 70 Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego (GMCSD) members who walked out onto the field at Petco Park at today's San Diego Padres game against Atlanta Braves to sing the national anthem. It was one of my proudest performing moments next to singing at the March on Washington in 1993 with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and my opening night doing A Chorus Line in Hawaii. I am so lucky to have been blessed with a gift and talent that has brought me to sing next to the most amazing brothers that are the GMCSD. This may not be the first time a self-proclaimed gay men's chorus has sung the national anthem in a major league baseball game, but it was controversial enough as the San Diego Padres scheduled "Out at The Park Day" to celebrate gay pride month coinciding with "Free Floppy Hat Day to Kids". Well that was enough to piss of the right-wing conservative christians. Two weeks prior to today's events, thousands of protests via the internet, phone calls and letters flooded the Padres' camp which of course ended up all over the news. More than 1100 gay and lesbians and supporters attended the event. The love poured out as they cheered us on and image of gay community was so overwhelming. Today is a day I will never forget. I stood next to my comrades, my brothers singing"...what so proudly we hailed..." This is why we sing! The hate still exists!
