Diplomacy
I'm playing in a slow, PBEM-like Diplomacy game. The most interesting part there is the map. If you want to learn the basics of the game (fairly simple), Wikipedia has a good writeup and more links.
That first link also has rules, and the current goings-on. It's not necessarily all that interesting (we only make moves once a week), but if you check back on Mondays you can watch the world crumble around me. All of the players are my coworkers, some of whom sit right next to me, so it's fun to at least destroy and back stab them.
I'm doing OK for right now. I'm Austria-Hungary, near the center of the map (but spreading to the lower right).
